The Bomonti coffee trail — six stops, one morning
The definitive morning coffee walk through Bomonti — six spots ranked by quality, with notes on when each opens and what to order.
Bomonti used to be a brewery district. Today it's where Istanbul's coffee scene quietly grew up — away from the tourist trail, one specialty roaster at a time. If you're staying at Hexa Suites, all six stops below are within a twenty-minute walk.
1. Petra Roasting Co.
Start here. Petra was one of the first specialty coffee shops in the neighbourhood and still one of the best. The single-origin filter changes weekly; ask what's on the pourover bar. Opens at 08:00, which is early by Bomonti standards.
What to order: Seasonal filter, black. The croissants arrive fresh at 08:30.
2. Bomontiada Courtyard Café
The old Bomonti brewery complex was converted into a cultural centre in 2016. Inside the courtyard you'll find a small café that runs on Petra beans. The space is spectacular — brick arches, a garden, occasional live music in the evenings.
What to order: Flat white. Come back in the evening for natural wine.
3. Kronotrop Şişli
Technically just over the neighbourhood border, but worth the five-minute walk. Kronotrop has been roasting in Istanbul since 2012 and remains the benchmark. Their espresso blend is dialled in perfectly.
What to order: Double espresso or a cold brew if it's warm.
4. % Arabica Istanbul
The Japanese chain's Istanbul outpost is on the Bomonti hill with a terrace view over the city. It gets busy after 10:00; arrive early for a seat outside.
What to order: The signature cloud latte or a Gibraltar.
5. Coffee Department
A smaller, neighbourhood-local shop that doesn't show up on most tourist lists. The baristas are serious and the music is good. Perfect for a second coffee when you want to sit with your laptop for an hour.
What to order: Cortado.
6. Sade Kahve
End here for a completely different experience: traditional Turkish coffee, prepared in the old way with copper cezve over hot sand. It's a ten-minute walk from Hexa Suites.
What to order: Turkish coffee with medium sugar (orta şekerli), with a piece of lokum on the side.
The full walk takes about two hours if you stop at each one. Most locals pick two or three — Petra for breakfast, Kronotrop mid-morning, Sade Kahve as a palate cleanser. The neighbourhood is most pleasant between 08:00 and 11:00 before the traffic builds up.
If you're heading out from the hotel, turn left on Evrenoszade Sk. and follow your nose.
